Birds
This section has yet to be fully developed. For now, I have a few notes (provided below), and a list of over 200 species of birds recorded for Onondaga Lake by M. Rusk and others for the period 1950-1975 (spreadsheet available upon request).
Passenger pigeons (Ectopistes migratorius) were reported by Moravian travelers, Jesuits, Peter Kalm (in 1750 or so) and others. “In the Spring,” report the Jesuits at Ste Marie in 1657, “so great numbers of Pigeons collect around these salt-springs, that sometimes as many as seven hundred are caught in the course of one morning” (Thwaites 1899).
An article from the Syracuse Standard of August 30, 1898 reports the poaching of snipe and plover along the shores of Onondaga Lake. “The season for snipe and plover does not open until September 1, and there is a heavy penalty attached to the violation of this statute” the article warns (Anonymous1898).
